How To Stop The Payday Loan Cycle (For Canadians)

The latest client has asked the question regarding how to stop the payday loan cycle that he is in. This will be the third time that he has used or would like to use a payday loan service and he is concerned about the high cost of payday loans. The combination of fees and interest make them much more expensive than a regular personal loan from a bank.

Many people cannot obtain a personal loan due to credit ratings etc and turn to payday loans for emergency funds to help them make it though the period until they are paid. In our client’s case he has had a slow week of tips at the restaurant where he works and needs some money to pay his rent which is due at the end of the month, plus utilities. He has no savings and he knows that he will be able to repay the loan in the next week or so when business picks up.

Because of the high interest rates, he wants to know how to get out of the pay day loan cycle. The answer to his question is to develop a budget and set aside sufficient money to meet his current needs for rent, utilities, groceries and clothing. Every pay check should be put towards this objective until he has sufficient savings to ensure that he will no longer need to turn to a payday loan when his income dips a bit and leaves him short, which is his current situation.

Pay day loans meet a need for consumers who have short term emergencies and need access to funds prior to payday. They are convenient from this perspective and meet the need; however you do pay for convenience in terms of high interest costs. The lenders will review his application and have further conversation with him regarding his application and ability to repay the loan.

DEFAULT LOAN APPLICATION FOR BORROWER’S INFORMATION

Loan Amount :: $1000

Loan Application and Processing Speed (when do you need the funds):: today or tomorrow at the latest

Do you currently have a mortgage? :: I do not have a mortgage, I currently rent an apartment

Bank Name and Branch :: Royal Bank, King st. E.

What City/Town, State and County do you live in? :: Hamilton, Ontario

Postal code :: L8G 1K1

What is your employment field? :: I work as a waiter at a local restaurant

Employment Position :: part-time waiter

When are you paid? (monthly/weekly/biweekly):: biweekly minimum wage payment, and daily tips from customers

Your credit rating to be – excellent, fair, or bad? :: I don’t know if I have a credit rating, I do not own a credit card and I do not have a checking account, just a savings account so that I can cash my checks

How did you find us? :: I am sitting in the library using a public computer looking for online payday loans in Canada

How are you paid? (direct deposit/paper check):: I am paid in cash as well as a check, the cash is for tips and the check is based on the hours I work at minimum wage

Gross Amount Per Paycheck ::$760 plus tips

Do you agree to have this information published online, without your PRIVATE information of course? :: I don’t really care whether the information is kept private or not, I just don’t want my name associated with the loan application that gets into the public

Extra information here please (some detail):: this will be the third time that I’ve applied for a payday loan in the last six months. This time I need $1000 to get me through until I am paid next week. Between my tips and my paycheck I should be able to afford to repay this thousand dollar loan plus interest and expenses.

What I really want to know is how to get out of the cycle of using payday loans? They are very expensive and the interest rates that are charged are extremely high. If I could only arrange to get a personal loan or somehow increase my savings I would not have to pay the high interest rates associated with payday loans. This will be my third time using a payday loan service and although it is convenient it is very expensive and I would really like to avoid using this service.

Note to Lender :: I work six days a week as a waiter from three in the afternoon until midnight. My income is based on the minimum wage times the number of hours at work plus the tips that are given to us averaged throughout the staff.

This past week has been slow and as a result I need a payday loan to pay the rent and my utilities. Next Week I know that it will pick up as it gets closer to the month end and government checks arrive. The end of the month is usually much busier than the beginning of the month. I should have no problem repaying the payday loan as I have in the past. Tips are always much better closer to month-end as more people are eating out with their families and friends and going to the bars.

  37. Jeff applied for the following loan:

    Loan: 13,000

    Speed: ASAP

    Credit: Fair

    Location: South Mountain, Ontario

    Income: Gross Income per month: Jeff – $5,600 - 2014 Spouse - $3,300 – 2014 TOTAL $8900

    Reason:

    This is a bit of a long story so I will try to be as brief as possible.

    For the past 4-1/2 years we have been fully supporting a son (now 30 yrs old) who suffers from serious Mental Health issues and has not worked since 2010. He lives in a small studio apartment in Ottawa and we have been covering his expenses (rent, food, internet etc) over that 4-1/2 years. And over the past 2+ years we have been soliciting assistance from our Government and finally at the end of January, 2015he was finally given the ODSP coverage. We have now been able to try to get back some semblance of normalcy.

    The caveat being, that now our finances are in such a mess and I have had to rely on PayDay Loans just to survive. We just need to break the cycle of PayDay loans and pay off one credit card (RBC Visa – $10,000) in order to get back to a normal life. Yes we have other debts, but they were not an issue up until now with the mess created by trying to keep my son alive since 2010!!

    I have turned to our own Bank, but they keep dragging their heels and I am not sure what to do next, hence my e-mail. I do not believe that we need to consolidate everything…just need to break the PayDay cycle and clean up the one credit card. Everything else is manageable based on solid income from both my wife and I.

  38. Dani applied for the following loan:

    Loan: $5000

    Speed: Today - ASAP

    Credit: poor recently, previously good

    Location: Calgary, AB

    Income: $3600/mth (net, salary) direct deposit - has previously exceed $4400/mth as I make a base salary plus commissions, however with the oil $ gas market in a slump my commission is very low compared to the past.

    Reason:

    Consolidate high-interest debt, stop cycle of payday loans, bring all bills up-to-date, make urgent car repair. I have relied on payday loans to keep my head above water but $500-$1500 just ends up costing far too much monthly and I have to re-loan. I need a long-term solution, I am responsible with spending but Calgary is an expensive city to live in on your own (rent + car + parking + food + etc). The urgency is that I am in need of a significant car repair and the loans I currently have will not cover that.
